Dr. Sally Mellgren has practiced ophthalmology in Oceanside, California since 1987 before moving to Roswell, NM in 2016. As a board-certified ophthalmologist, she is highly respected and well-known in North San Diego County communities and beyond as a compassionate, innovative physician and surgeon who remains on the cutting edge of new technology and approaches to caring for her patients. In her general ophthalmology practice, Dr. Mellgren specializes in the treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, implantable contact lens (an alternative to Lasik surgery), abnormalities of the cornea and macular degeneration.

In her general ophthalmology practice, Dr. Mellgren specializes in the treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, laser vision correction, cornea and dry eye. She offers deluxe multifocal and astigmatism correction implants for cataract procedures. She does laser, i-stents and canaloplasty for glaucoma. For laser vision correction she offers LASIK, PRK, and the latest SMILE procedure. For very high myopia with or without astigmatism the Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) is available. For corneal clouding she offers DMEK, the latest in corneal transplantation. Innovative ocular surface or dry eye treatments are easy and affordable and an important part of preserving vision in her practice.
Dr. Mellgren received her medical degree in 1983 from Loma Linda University School of Medicine. She completed her Residency in Ophthalmology in 1987 at White Memorial Medical Center. She has instilled in her practice core values including serving others with compassion, integrity, excellence, humility and respect for all. Passionate about vision, she is unpretentious in her style, and patients appreciate her calm, caring approach to vision needs, prayer before surgery, generosity of time and a wonderful sense of humor.
Dr. Mellgren was raised in Carlsbad, California, and now lives in the community of Roswell, NM. She enjoys nature and the outdoors. She is an avid organic gardener, growing fruits, vegetables, pollinator plants and roses. She is a lifelong vegan and enjoys teaching plant-based living to promote a healthy lifestyle and increased vision health. Dr. Mellgren has been involved in multiple mission trips providing cataract surgery and eye care to both the Marshall Islands and Micronesia in association with Canvasback Missions.
